For Anders’ birthday, we went to lunch at the Blue Water Seafood Market & Grill in San Diego. It was our first time here, so we decided to start with some of the most expensive sandwiches on the menu. The Seared Ahi Tuna with Chipotle seasoning on a toasted sandwich, and the soft shell crap sandwich with lemon butter seasoning. Both were “served on soft boleo roll with lettuce, tomato, red onion and tartar. Toasted upon request.” We also opted in for the optional Avocado. While we did ask for them to be toasted that never happened but we decided to dig in anyway. No reason to send back perfectly good sandwiches after all.
While we don’t typically use our blog for reviews, we thought we would write about this, as it was some of the freshest sandwiches we’ve both had in a long time. The soft rolls and gentle seasoning does not overpower the fish and crab taste, and even the chipotle seasoning is left at a minimum. It’s a fine balance to strike when making fish sandwiches, but the Blue Water chef pulled it off great. The tuna was our favorite, but the soft shell crab had lots more taste to it.
The sandwiches were served on typical lunch plastic plates, which doesn’t quite do them justice, and with two ice teas, they set us back $30 total. Quite an expensive lunch for sure, but it was a birthday occasion. The Blue Water Grill has sandwiches priced down to about $7, which we will try next time.
Overall a pleasant experience, but for $30 I would have expected a bit more to the ingredients than shredded lettuce.
We’re coming back.
